TL:DR
- Best crossing for Croatia → Montenegro: Debeli Brijeg (main) or Vitaljina (quieter, cars only)
- Summer peak wait at Debeli Brijeg: up to 4–5 hours in July/August on peak days
- Cameras are hosted on the official Montenegro police portal and refresh every 40 seconds
- Direct links to every live feed are in the table below
- Montenegro is not in Schengen: your 90-day stay here doesn’t count against your Schengen allowance
Montenegro’s Ministry of Interior has been running live Montenegro border cameras since 2019: and if you’re planning a road trip to or from Montenegro, checking them before you leave can save you hours in a queue. The cameras cover all nine border crossings and refresh every 40 seconds. In summer, the difference between crossing at the right time and the wrong time at Debeli Brijeg can be four hours of your life. Below you’ll find direct links to every live feed, plus everything you need to know about wait times, documents, and which crossing to actually use.
Live Border Cameras: All Crossings
All cameras are hosted on the official Montenegro Ministry of Interior portal (kamere.mup.gov.me) and refresh every 40 seconds. No app needed: works on mobile.

Croatia ↔ Montenegro: The Two Crossings Explained
This is the most-searched crossing in the region: and the one most likely to ruin your day if you get it wrong.
Debeli Brijeg / Karasovići (main crossing)
- Road: Herceg Novi → Dubrovnik, along the Adriatic Highway
- No-man’s land: roughly 5km separates the Montenegrin checkpoint (Debeli Brijeg) from the Croatian one (Karasovići)
- Summer wait times: July–August up to 4–5 hours on peak days (Fridays and Sundays are worst)
- Off-season: 15–30 minutes
- Open 24/7
- Suitable for: all vehicles: cars, campervans, buses, trucks
- Insurance: a Sava insurance office operates at this crossing if you need to buy border insurance on the spot
- Tip: cross before 8am or after 9pm in summer. The worst window is 10am–2pm, when day-trippers from Dubrovnik pile in alongside everyone else
Vitaljina / Kobila (alternative crossing)
- Road: a detour off the Adriatic Highway via Molunat (Croatia) and local roads through Vitaljina village
- Passenger cars and light vehicles only: no buses, no trucks, no large campervans
- Significantly less congestion than Debeli Brijeg in summer; on a Tuesday in July, you might find just 2–4 cars at each checkpoint
- Open 24/7 as of early 2026
- Roads: paved but narrow and winding: fine in daylight, take it easy after dark
- Caveat: occasional system glitches have caused brief closures in the past. If the camera shows no activity and you’re unsure, check before committing to the detour
- Tip: if you’re driving a standard car between June and mid-September, always consider Vitaljina over Debeli Brijeg: the extra driving time is almost always worth it

Bosnia ↔ Montenegro Crossings
Sitnica (Herceg Novi → Trebinje)
- Most used Bosnia crossing for travellers coming from the coast
- Moderate wait times even in summer: far less tourist pressure than the Croatia border
- Good option if you’re heading to Mostar or Sarajevo from Herceg Novi or Budva
- Note: there’s a toll road on the Montenegrin side (approx. €3 per car)
Šćepan Polje (Nikšić → Sarajevo)
- Mountain crossing on a scenic route through the Tara canyon area
- Low traffic year-round
- Road can be challenging in winter: snow and ice are common; check conditions before driving
Ilino Brdo (Nikšić → Trebinje)
- Quiet crossing, minimal wait times
- Used mainly by locals and travellers heading to Trebinje
- The winding approach road on the Montenegrin side requires care: better in daylight
Serbia ↔ Montenegro Crossings
Dračenovac (Rožaje → Novi Pazar)
- Main Serbia crossing for northern Montenegro
- Moderate traffic, rarely congested
- Straightforward crossing with no particular quirks
Dobrakovo (Bijelo Polje → Prijepolje)
- Secondary Serbia crossing
- Low traffic, quick crossing
- Used mainly by locals and travellers on the Bar–Belgrade corridor

Albania ↔ Montenegro Crossings
Božaj (Podgorica → Shkodër)
- Main Albania crossing, busiest of the two
- Wait times: 5–15 minutes off-season, up to 90 minutes during peak summer hours (10am–2pm)
- Green Card insurance is checked here: you can also buy border insurance at this crossing if needed
- Practical tip: exchange currency after crossing: ATMs in Shkodër give better rates than border booths
Sukobin (Ulcinj → Shkodër)
- Coastal Albania crossing, popular with travellers on the Adriatic route
- Low traffic, quick crossing
- Summer queues of 30–45 minutes are possible but uncommon
What Documents Do You Need?
EU citizens
- Valid passport or national ID card (ID card gives 30 days; passport gives 90 days)
- Vehicle registration document (if driving)
- Green Card insurance or proof your policy covers Montenegro (check with your insurer before you go)
- No visa required: 90 days stay allowed
Non-EU travellers (US, UK, Australian, Canadian, etc.)
- Valid passport: Montenegro officially requires at least 3 months validity beyond your stay; 6 months is safer
- Vehicle Green Card insurance (mandatory for drivers: buy it from your insurer before travel, or at Debeli Brijeg if you arrive without one)
- EES registration: since 10 April 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational at Croatian border crossings. Non-EU citizens crossing from Croatia into Montenegro will have their biometrics (fingerprints + facial scan) registered on the Croatian side. This is a one-time process on your first Schengen crossing: subsequent crossings are faster. It can add time to queues on high-volume days at Debeli Brijeg
- Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free in Montenegro
Important for all travellers
Montenegro is not in the Schengen Area. Your 90-day Montenegro stay does not count against your Schengen 90-day allowance. The two are entirely separate systems: useful if you’re bouncing between Montenegro and EU countries.
Travelling with children? If one parent is travelling alone with a child, carry a notarised consent letter from the other parent. Border guards can and do ask for it.
Rental cars: always confirm with your rental company before crossing: some restrict cross-border travel or charge a surcharge for Montenegro. Get it in writing.
When to Cross: Wait Time Guide by Season
| Period | Debeli Brijeg | Vitaljina | Bosnia crossings | Serbia crossings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Apr | 15–30 min | 10–15 min | 10–20 min | 10–20 min |
| May–Jun | 30–60 min | 15–30 min | 15–30 min | 15–30 min |
| Jul–Aug (peak) | 2–5 hours | 45–90 min | 30–60 min | 20–40 min |
| Sep–Oct | 30–60 min | 15–30 min | 15–30 min | 15–30 min |
| Nov–Dec | 15–30 min | 10–15 min | 10–20 min | 10–20 min |
Best times to cross in summer: before 8am or after 9pm.
Worst times: Friday afternoon (outbound from Croatia) and Sunday evening (return traffic from the coast). These two windows are reliably the most painful at Debeli Brijeg.
Tips to Avoid Long Waits
- Use Vitaljina instead of Debeli Brijeg (Croatia border) if you’re in a passenger car: saves 2–3 hours in peak summer
- Cross early morning (before 8am) or late evening (after 9pm): the difference is dramatic in July and August
- Have all documents ready before reaching the checkpoint. Don’t search for your Green Card at the booth: it holds up the entire line
- Keep vehicle insurance accessible in the glovebox, not buried in a bag
- GPS routing: most nav apps default to Debeli Brijeg. Manually select Vitaljina if you want the quieter option: it requires a turn-off near Molunat
- Non-EU travellers: pre-register your passport data on the EU’s “Travel to Europe” mobile app before reaching the Croatian border: it can speed up EES processing
- Flying into Dubrovnik? Add at least 2 hours buffer to your itinerary if you’re crossing into Montenegro in summer. Missing a flight because of a border queue is more common than you’d think

FAQ
Are the Montenegro border webcams free to use?
Yes, completely free. The cameras are operated by the Montenegro Ministry of Interior and accessible to anyone at kamere.mup.gov.me. No registration, no app required.
How often do the Montenegro border cameras refresh?
Every 40 seconds. If the image looks frozen, refresh your browser tab: occasional technical hiccups do happen.
What is the best time to cross the Croatia–Montenegro border in summer?
Before 8am or after 9pm. The worst window is 10am–2pm, especially on Fridays (outbound) and Sundays (return). If you can’t avoid peak hours, use Vitaljina instead of Debeli Brijeg.
Can I cross the Montenegro border with a national ID card (EU)?
Yes, but with a limit: an EU national ID card allows a 30-day stay in Montenegro. If you want the full 90 days, bring your passport.
Does Montenegro count as Schengen?
No. Montenegro is not in the Schengen Area and not in the EU (though it’s a candidate country). Your days in Montenegro don’t count against your Schengen 90-day allowance: the two systems are entirely separate.
Is the Vitaljina crossing always open?
It’s open 24/7 as of 2026, but it has had brief closures in the past due to technical issues or maintenance. Check the live camera before committing to the detour, especially outside peak season.
What happens if I arrive at the border without a Green Card?
At Debeli Brijeg, there’s a Sava insurance office where you can buy border insurance on the spot. This option is not available at all crossings (notably not at smaller ones like Vitaljina). If you’re unsure whether your policy covers Montenegro, sort it before you travel: your insurer can usually add it or issue a Green Card quickly.
Which crossing is best for travelling from Dubrovnik to Kotor?
In summer, Vitaljina / Kobila if you’re in a passenger car: it’s slower to drive but far faster overall. In low season, Debeli Brijeg is fine and more direct. Either way, leave Dubrovnik before 7:30am to beat the wave.
